How it came about: on the Bridge of Khazad-dûm in The Fellowship of the Ring (2001), Gandalf faces the Balrog and bellows "You shall not pass!" - in Tolkien's book it's "You cannot pass". The film's line spread as soon as the film was out.

Why it caught on: it's the line for anyone blocking the way - goalkeepers, parents, doormen - and it makes saying no sound heroic.
