san juan cholo meme: in my contree / memes, is go to sleep

A san juan cholo post.

Your friend's group chat goes quiet when you ask why the plans changed. You send the message anyway, in your worst Spanglish, and the reply is a single "jaja ok". You do not sleep that night. The teacher asks everyone to hand in an essay on a Monday, and you remember on Sunday at 11 pm. You write it with the confidence of a man who has read the title twice. The first line is a bold claim and the rest is padding. Someone asks why you're standing so oddly in the photo. You tilt your head, mutter something about your neck, and hold the pose for another three minutes. It is not on purpose. It is also, a bit, on purpose. Your mate says he's finished the group project, and you ask which part. He lists four. You list a font choice. Somebody tells you not to push your luck, and you decide that is the end of the conversation. **Why it caught on:** the picture shows a young man with a patterned bandana and a heavy chain, head tilted to one side, with the words "San Juan Cholo" printed across the bottom. Who he is and where the photo came from isn't clear, but people captioned it with Spanish-language Mexican slang, bad-English jokes and the tilted-head pose, usually finished with "no se quiera pasar". "Cholo" is a label that has long been used as a stereotype for a Latino street style, and the captions mostly turn it into a character who is cocky, a bit lazy and quite proud of it.
